This immediately made me think of communism, and it just made me think that it would never work for one reason. There's no insentive to farm for things, people wouldn't farm for 4 bulwarks and give away 3 they would just farm 1 and take whatever else they got from others. People would stop farming altogether because there's no point in farming items if noone is going to buy them.
And guess what happens if let's say 25% of the people follow this rule, they'd farm less because of course the rewards they get from others would be less than what they would have gotten from farming so they farm less, then what happens to prices with less of each item in the market..they skyrocket.
You think stuff is expensive now, while pretty much everyone is either ettin farming, 55 hp monk farming, or griffon farming, prices are going down. Hell, the less people farm the less influx of items and the higher the price.
So in my opinion a more probable solution would be to get more people to farm since 20 people are going to try and sell a Bulwark it's going to be alot lower than if one person i sselling one.

I believe an underlying critical analysis of the mentality of many Guild Wars players would reveal a largely irrational urge to earn the most wealth; even through seemingly repetitive processes such as farming-that can be attributed to the mindest produced from living in a largely capitalistic world (which emphasises already the survival trait of "hoard the most important stuff and you'll live").
But hey, it's only an anecdotal observation, from playing with a young guildie of mine, who has the biggest urge to go out and hoard gold and various virtual items, for no other reason than the fact that he can. I personally can't understand how this urge can keep him farming for hours-even though he admits it's horribly boring.

How does everyone need money in GW? From my point of view, the largest cost of a necessity is outfitting a warrior for PvP (~300k). FOW armour costs more, I can't grasp the strength of the motive that would propel someone to hoard that much money.
I don't know. I can't understand it, but for those who do it, that's fine by me. I think GW is one of the first MMO's to put less emphasis on money; but still, I think if it were possible to get all the perfect items and equipment in 20 hours (but perhaps still had an equivalent of fissure or something), people would still farm.
Or maybe I'm just a dirty communist

And people are willing to steal for Fissure armor...
I give away loads of gold to anybody if I have it. If I get a few k in one day, I give it away most of the time. One time someone was asking in Tombs D1 for money for his Guild Hall, and I gave him 30k. I just didn't need it.
Look, people, its not real money. Nobody is proud of you (except yourself, perhaps) for spending 2,000 hours of your life raking together millions of fake gold to buy fake 2 million dollar clothing.
Sure, some people might go 'Ooooh, never seen that before'. But it ends at that point. Nobody likes you for it, nobody cares. Its fake. Stop being cheap.

And you get somewhere from hording in real life? Even the richest people will die one day, and nobody will care. They might have a big tomb, and that's all. They might make their children rich and establish a rich lineage, but do you think their children, or even they, will care who made them that way? No.
Where do you think that puts the middle class? Do you think anyone passing your tomb stone will say 'Hey, that guy had a nice car!'?
Money is only good for how and where you use it, nothing more. Yes, some very rare people do give freely in real life too. Somehow, they manage not to die of starvation.

I think it all boils down to what kind of person you are. Its no secret there are some greedy people out there and worse...scammers who deliberately try to trick you for profit. Ive given away too many items to mention and always seem to attract the lost soul who doesnt even know about runes of holding let alone attribute points or farming and usually spend time helping them out. I have met some pretty cool people this way and the reputation you build up as these people mention you to their friends is a nice thing to have because people genuinely value your opinion.
Its not hard to give something decent to people who are in need...you are never going to give ecto or a godly fellblade to a newbie anyway so why bother about a near perfect short sword with low requirements when its probably only worth 4k these days anyway? typically there is only a trade in upgrades and perfect rare skin weapons etc and newbies wont be needing these anyway. My storage is full of decent weapons that I give away regularly because I can make more farming than I can selling them.

I will never do that again to people I do not know. I have had so much grief from people I have helped bugging me every second of my time in-game for free stuff or help. It has got so bad I set my status to do not disturb most of the time.

I find the looks of my char more important then if I have 1k or 1000k in my storage. Sitting on all that money is just pointless and I would rather have a char that I think looks good.
At this point, every time I get to 15k I get another part of my 15k glads armour. Feel no need for FoW warrior armour, because I think it looks like crap.

i consider my toon with 1.5k armor to be ok looking.seeing as the changes to the 15k or fissure armour are in my view not that great to warrant that expenditure.
But we will see what factions will bring.

That happened with me as well and is the reason I no longer give stuff away.
It's a real shame since I actually enjoyed doing that. But, as is true with you, the constant messages asking for more ended up (1) becoming constant and nagging (2) despite the fact that it shouldn't have done this it actually made me feel guilty when I didn't give the person something every time they asked (that, I'll admit is my own fault) and (3) I begin to wonder if I was encouraging people not to play the game ... the free items, free cash, free runs and escourting them through missions didn't do much to encourage them to develop as players.

Why do you care what everyone else thinks of your cash, you mentioned if your rich irl then nobody will think more of you for it, but nobody will think any more of you if your not rich, or even if you give free money away, people are rich for their own benefit, if they enjoy having a lot of cash makes them happy why should they care if noboy else loves them for it.
Same goes for guild wars, people play guild wars for fun, its fun having a lot of cash, its fun having decent armour, i dont play guild wars in the hope that everyone will love me for it, i play it for fun.

I don't bother farming. Anything I don't plan to use I give away if I cannot sell it.
Sometimes it is more satisfying to give it away than spend 10hours looking for people to buy it.

My final thoughts..
Again:
I appreciate the interest in my post and glad to see members of this and the GW community sharing your thoughts.
1) I received the kind of responses i assumed i would....you guys are entitled to horde your gold and save every gold piece, however you attain them...it is your right...
2) Just to make sure everyone understands what the Original Post was about...there are two key words "Need" and "Want"...these are for you to determine..personally I "need" a max armor to compete in GvG and PvP and survive the Environment...but I "wanted" Fow armor...so for awhile I farmed to get it...once I got it i gave away the extra 3 shards and ecto I had to someone who "wanted" them.
3) I knew this post would end up being about my character more than the character of GW players...just goes to back up my point that people are mostly concerned about themselves, and rightfully so its just a game.
Note to Kimo the Healer....Actually I did get 90% of my shards and ecto from farming mid-level items and selling to the merchant...ive been doing it since the game came out..15 minute farming runs at 3k each...do the math...oh and I dont give away any vanity items...I typically include superior Vigors and Absorbtions in this category...ive been running majors since the game came out...havent needed a sup yet...
one last note...Thanks to all who responded, praised the concept of "gifting" and criticized it, just goes to show there is a community, I would just like to see it spread to more doing and less talking about it....
Thanks to ALL
